WWE SMACKDOWN REVIEW
JUNE 11, 2019

It's time for Smackdown. What fun and intriguing storylines await us?

Do ANY fun and intriguing storylines await us?

Let's watch and find out!

Here we see The Miz and Drew McIntyre about to fight over Who Wore It Better.

In all seriousness, how many more cycles of Cocaine Shane vs Miz and Roman Reigns are we going to go through?

Theit execution of it is fine enough, I guess. I like that Miz has to beat both henchmen.

Better luck next time, Miz. And we all know, there WILL be a next time. Probably on Monday.

I will say this, they are doing a good job of making Shane McMahon into a completely obnoxious person that we want to see get punched in the face. So they are doing THAT right.

I like having Mandy Rose shamelessly throwing her magazine at anyone and everyone, and I like how it's created tension with Ember Moon.

I feel like they try to make more storylines with the Mandy Rose character than they do with some of the others. Maybe one of these will hit.

This was good. Pitting Heavy Machinery as "Blue Collar Solid" against the elitist Planet's Champions is a great play.

I also feel like they are having Otis sound more like a functional adult, and less like a babbling toddler. That's a good thing.

Sonya Deville saves the day, again. I don't know if they are going to have Sonya or Mandy be the villain in this eventual breakup, but they are spending good time laying the groundwork for it.

Alexa is a sociopath. We've seen her realize that her own actions come back to bite her, and ultimately leave her lonely. Yet, she's still using Nikki Cross for her own gain.

I like this idea..They can have Alexa getting Nikki worked up until she goes "crazy" like the Nikki of old.

Eventually Nikki can figure this out, and seek revenge. Intense, maniacal, revenge!

I still think a faction of Owens, Ziggler, and Zayn would do well. Maybe I'm just trying to will my idea into existence.

The New Day is complete again. Is there still anything they haven't done? Should we move on from this group?

This guy whines too much. Certainly there's a more professional way for Aleister Black to get a match, right?

Can't he just ask the General Manager for a match? I'm sure Apollo Crews or EC3 is hanging around doing nothing.

Or, maybe not, since you have all those guys busy chasing R Truth through a Chili's.

This wasn't bad. They continued the concept of Alexa using Nikki like a pawn against Bayley.

Firefly Funhouse! This was the same segment they aired the previous night on RAW.

If you'd like to know what my reaction was, read my Monday Night Raw Review - June 10, 2019.

Here we go! I was all about to question of this promo did anything for anyone involved.

What exactly is this new gimmick for Chad? Any guesses? Share them with us on Twitter, using #TweetTheTable and we might read some on the next podcast episode.

New Day wins! They had to win, right? On Big E's first night back?

Unless he would have turned on the New Day, and joined his old buddy Dolph.

Wouldn't that be a New Day?

WWE RAW REVIEW

 JUNE 10, 2019

source: USA Network
Coming of the heels of the "exciting" Super Showdown, what will the fallout be on RAW?

Will the San Jose crowd love, or loathe, what is presented to them?

Let's settle in for a 3-hour tour, and find out the answers to these questions!

source: USA Network
Fifteen minutes of rehearsed promos and stare-downs!

Having Baron picking his own referee for his upcoming title match against Seth Rollins is a great idea.

I like the explanation, that Corbin feels the referee cost him his previous title chance, so he gets to hand-pick the special guest referee for the next match.

I even like that Sami Zayn got involved and is actively trying to be that referee, hoping for a return favor from Corbin.

Throwing Kevin Owens into the mix felt a little excessive, but he's the lifelong best friend of Sami Zayn, so those two essentially get a free pass to always be in each other's storylines.

source: USA Network
It is hard for me to understand why WWE thinks I will get mad, and dislike Lars because he beats up The Lucha House Party.

It is even harder for me to comprehend why they think I will KEEP getting angry when he won't do anything else.

I'm not angry; I'm just bored.

source: USA Network
Hey! Look at that! GTV is back!

Is that too old of a reference in 2019?

They say it was supposed to be revealed that Tom Green was behind GTV. That would have excited me about as much as the current 24/7 Title storyline excites me.

source: USA Network
These are some of the same faces Tom and I make while we record episodes of The Spanish Announce Table podcast.

I know the play is that Lacey Evans is a "lady", and Becky Lynch is " The Man", but it just feels like they're milking that to a point where there's nothing much else to the story.

I would have Lacey Evans trying to host several seminars where she's advising girls on how to be a "lady", and have Becky Lynch call in and wreck shit. Get loud, get crass, everything not "ladylike".

Lacey then gets revenge in the way of a beat down and a challenge for the title at "fill-in-the-blank WWE Network event".

source: USA Network
I guess we're seeing a confused Alexa Bliss. She is still doing evil, though she is becoming self-aware of how that is affecting her personal life negatively.

Or maybe I'm hoping for way more subtlety than WWE is capable of providing in 2019.

source: USA Network
This would have been a perfectly intriguing storyline of if they left it at Joe and Miz.

Joe's line about Miz's family was good, and their chemistry in the stare-down was also good.

Then we got 4 other people involved. Then we got a random 6-man tag for no real reason, even though the champion had to team with guys who were just ready to fight him.

Then Cesaro got hurt.

Was all this really needed?

Source: USA Network
Looks like Nikki Cross was a little upset about the way Alexa's team won the match.

I'm still left with mixed messages about Alexa Bliss. Hopefully, that's the point.

source: USA Network
This was good. I like how Shane McMahon just made the declaration as though he came up with Sami Zayn's idea himself.

I do think the performance of it was lacking a little subtlety, but that feels like being too picky with what they've been putting out lately.

source: USA Network
Even though it's accepted as a fact that Paul Heyman can talk people into the building; we've reached a point where I no longer care.

That's weird to say, because this was a good promo; of course. I just feel like this shtick is completely used up.

source: USA Network
IIconics vs jobbers. I can't hate it too much because the IIconics are fun.

I'm sure it will get old fast, though.

source: USA Network
It's time for another edition of Cocaine Shane and the Gang!

This just feels too recycled. I want them to be done with it, or do something shocking.

Now I feel like I need to make sure that they understand "shocking" is not a brawl backstage. Like, something diabolical, backstabbing, etc.

Any ideas? Share them with us on Twitter using #TweetTheTable.

source: USA Network
Sure. Why not. There's still not much to the story they are telling here, but The Revival are fine as Tag Team Champs.

And hey, maybe now The Usos can catch them sleeping and draw on their faces with markers. That's what cool guys do in 2019, right?

source: USA Network
Bray Wyatt might have stumbled upon a marketing goldmine with this new gimmick.

If they are not selling an actual jam that I can buy by next month, they are not doing things right.

Tom did pose a heavy question on the podcast, when he asked; how do we get this to the ring?

source: USA Network
No complaints here. They made good use of Sami in the outside referee role, which gave good reason to have Rollins snap. Not sure where they go next, but I'm pretty sure Corbin ain't coming close to winning that title.

The Jon Moxley podcast interviews have really made it sink in that the storylines will continue to be boring until their corporate "think-tank" style of doing things goes away.

Maybe that happens because of FOX, maybe that happens because of TNA, and maybe it happens because of natural causes. I just hope it happens.

Either way, if you want to hear more of my thoughts, and the thoughts of Tom, check out the next episode of The Spanish Announce Table podcast, where we will talk about this show, and so much more!

WWE SMACKDOWN REVIEW - JUNE 4, 2019

It's time for Smackdown. I didn't think RAW was terrible; hopefully Smackdown won't lower the bar any.

source: USA Network
Well THAT doesn't look promising.

It's a struggle to have to remind myself that WWE is a global corporation, and that they're about to make a whole bunch of money.

Maybe my disdain should be directed at the people of Saudi Arabia. What unearthly reason compels these humans to WANT to see The Undertaker and Goldberg wrestle a match in 2019?

source: USA Network
I like the Kofi and Dolph angle. It's a very relatable jealousy storyline.

Kofi telling Dolph that it COULD have been him but he took himself out of the game was a really good response.

I personally was thinking the reason it wasn't Dolph is because he just comes across as genuinely being a smug douche. If that's all acting, then give that man an Oscar.

Also of note, I thought the Ghana video package from Kofi's trip back home was great; I'm just not sure it's best placed in the opening segment, presented by someone standing in the ring. It's heartwarming; it isn't heart-pumping. I'd think you'd want to start the show with the latter.

source: wwe.com
Can we get THIS as a faction? It feels like these three could make a great set of annoying, sophomoric heels.

At any rate, decent match here between The New Day and Owens & Zayn. Fairly routine set-up for the go-home of Super Showdown; Dolph attacks.

This is the only match on that card that I have any interest in checking out. I kind of hope the swerve us all and have Dolph go over, and win the title.

source: wwe.com
I think we're all aware that WWE can find ways to overuse the "heel hosts a talk show" idea. However, this kind of set-up is perfect for the heel Alexa Bliss character.

Now, that being said; is Alexa a heel? I feel like WWE spent no less than two segments of RAW trying to convince me otherwise. In fact, last I saw Alexa, we were all cheering her for snapping and attacking the IIconics.

Another aspect that WWE seems to not shake the habit of, is adding too many people into the story. It feels like everytime we need a new challenger for the title, I have to hear 3 or more intros, 3 or more reasons why someone should be the number one contender, and ALL of those reasons are essentially the same.

source: USA Network
I'm going to give WWE some credit. The 24/7 Title has been entertaining. Mostly due to R-Truth and Drake Maverick.

The Lumberjack Match was a nice change of pace, and it helped me formulate an idea to make this less of a wild circus.

The 24/7 Title can maintain its premise of being up for grabs at all times, all places, 24 hours a day, 7 days a week; but we don't need to act like every single mid carder wants to spend their every waking moment chasing a champion through Burger King.

Also, this concept lends itself to me having to believe that all it takes to beat someone is a surprise rollup. This will never be very exciting.

Here's my idea: reduce the amount of people that set their sites on this title. Have them challenge at random times and places, but make it an impromptu Falls Count Anywhere match that would stand-alone as a quality PPV or TV match.

Think of it, similar to a Flash Mob, you're at a WWE Meet and Greet, or something like that. R Truth shows up, is shaking hands, and then Zack Ryder (or whoever the hell you want to use for this reference), arrives with a referee and they have an impromptu 24/7 Title Match all over the Cricket Mobile store they are at.

The match lasts fifteen minutes, it's awesome, we get a new 24/7 Champ, and it's a viral hit on Facebook, YouTube, and Twitter. Then, you only have to do stuff like this every few weeks.

What do YOU think of this idea? Use #TweetTheTable on Twitter to share your thoughts and we'll read some of our favorites on the next episode of The Spanish Announce Table podcast.

source: USA Network
Aleister Black seems cool enough, but am I supposed to get behind someone that is hiding in a dark room, complaining that no one will seek him out for a fight; just for the sake of having a fight?

Or am I NOT supposed to get behind this? Is he the bad guy? I hope we get answers sooner, rather than later.

source: wwe.com
I wish there was more focus on Drew vs Roman. Drew just being the muscle doesn't really feature all of his assets well. He is just there. I really am not interested in seeing Shane McMahon wrestle.

source: wwe.com
This is what I was referencing earlier; if we are just going with Bayley vs Alexa Bliss, why did we involve Carmella, Charlotte, Sonya Deville, and Mandy Rose into this mess?

source: USA Network
Alright, they're giving us a little something wth Lars, here. He clearly doesn't like being called a freak. That can be some easy feul to put him on a rampage now and then.

An easy storyline that comes to mind is that Lars mistakes the niceness of one of the female superstars to mean she had romantic interests in him.

When she realizes this, the confides in her friends that she thinks he's a freak; which he overhears, and flips out. You can then pick some male superstar to play the role of protector.

Then you can always flip the script down the road and have the female actually start to like Lars, and start helping him. Just a thought.

source: wwe.com
I don't care about any of this. Not Andrade, Not Finn Balor, not Zelina Vega, and definitely not Apollo Crews.

I'm not trying to be rude, but it's just that I don't recall that WWE has given us much to care for here.

I'm not even sure how you could even really fix this, moving forward.

source: wwe.com
Okay, so this was actually a lot better than I feared it would be. Goldberg's promo skills are light years better than his run on the late 90's.

Goldberg also still carries a big fight feel with him, and he still jacked. This did enough to make me wonder what this match will look like, but I still don't care about the outcome.

That's the thing that these big, one-off, part, timer matches are typically missing; a reason to care who wins.

WWE RAW REVIEW

 JUNE 3, 2019

Another Monday night, another Raw. If I'm being honest; for as long as I can remember, the shows have been as boring as my opening line to this article.

Will tonight be different?
Has the lightbulb turned on?
Do they finally feel the pressure?

LET'S FIND OUT!

Well, I didn't expect to have my answer so soon.

Nothing screams "business as usual" quite like featuring Roman Reigns in the first 3 segments.

Now, to be fair, I thought Roman did well. He seemed really comfortable in his face off with Shane, and we're starting to see shades of his naturally cool demeanor.

Also, I still want Roman and The Usos to be a faction called The Bloodline. It's a perfect reason for Shane McMahon to be mad at Roman, since Shane would insist that THE Bloodline of professional wrestling is the McMahons, not the Anoa'is.

By the way, Shane McMahon was rocking the cocaine sweats like an 80's rockstar. Am I the only one seeing this?

I do like the idea of Shane using guys like Drew McIntyre and The Revival as his muscle. I would prefer he personally spent less time in the ring.

Brock Lesnar still has the Money In The Bank contract, and he's still playing mind games.

This works really well, because in an on screen level, it makes the viewer sympathize with the champions. Also, from a behind, the-scenes level, it makes us long term fans also get tired of Brock repeating the same schtick each week, that we will also want him to lose as quickly as possible, and go away again.

The Lars character is a prime example of my frustration with the product.
What is the point of this guy, exactly?

What stories are we going to tell wth this character?  Because the only one that I've ever seen WWE do, with these types of characters, is what they're doing now.

Someone will finally stand up to the monster, they will do a three month feud; then what?

I give it a year before Lars is a dancing babyface that wears silly hats.

So I guess we're turning Nikki Cross into a mentally-stable shy girl?

I liked the nutso Nicki Cross. There was so much to do with that character, and it was unlike anything any other woman in the roster is doing.

Are we turning Alexa Bliss babyface, or is she scheming? I'm assuming we'll find out later. Alexa is so good at being bad, but they do seem to be lacking in babyface women that people are actually caring about, so maybe this works.

Yeah, let's keep this Becky Lynch / Lacey Evans / Charlotte Flair rivalry going. After all, everyone keeps talking about how much they like this.

I mean, honestly I don't know what they're doing this for. No one wants Becky to be involved with Charlotte again. We want a break from that. Why is she there?

This is all a set up to get Dominic in the ring, right? Joe will continue to screw with an injured Rey, at which point his son will come to the rescue, setting up a match in the future.

That's my guess, anyway. I do like the heat that comes with relinquishing the title back to its previous holder, instead of some tournament or match to determine a new champ.

If it's not about Dominic, then I'm not really sure where this storyline can even go.

I didn't hate this as much as I thought I would. The set up for these Super Showdown storylines feels old-school. Which, may still work overseas since they weren't as over-saturated as we were with those kinds of stories.

It makes sense. Bad guy throws something in the good guy's eyes, both guys look like action figures, it's classic WWE presentation. It fits both of these guys enough, so I guess I'm good with it.

Five Feet of Fury! I loved when Alexa flipped the switch here. I would really like if Nikki Cross and Alexa Bliss would be a team that they don't even realize how dangerous they get when they snap.

Imagine, they are the only ones looking out for each other and keeping each other from going completely off the deep end. Almost like a "You wouldn't like me when I'm angry" set of characters.

I think Baron Corbin is money. There is so much to not like about this guy, that it makes him an easy sell as a top heel.

Just keep giving him wins and title shots, and have him be the biggest, smug bastard about it. WWE clearly has already figured this out, and its working well.

Also, we got more Brock, delaying a cash-in. I wish, now that we have the wildcard rule, that Kofi and Seth would work together. Everytime Brock goes to cash-in on one of them, the other makes the save, if only for one more week!

This could lead to a Triple Threat cash-in. If Brock pubs either champion, he wins their title. If a champ pins Brock, both champs retain. If a champ pounds the other champ; unified title! I think that would be a intriguing match.

I can't really explain why these Firefly Funhouse segments are still so fun to me, but that doesn't matter.

Having an evil, devil Vince puppet is a nice touch, given how much he's made out to be a devil by some people.

I also, want Bray to use that song for his entrance music!

Sometimes, the unintended moments are the best moments. The few seconds of shared giggling from Triple H and Randy Orton after Orton made the comment about Triple H's balls in Stephanie's purse, made me smile more than it should have, probably.

I'm not sure that helps sell tickets, but hey, I enjoyed it, nonetheless.

This is a prime example of how WWE has some of the best, most athletic professional wrestlers in the history of the business, but they have nothing to wrestle for. No real storyline, outside of Cesaro insisting that he's stronger and better than Ricochet.

This kind of storyline works okay for a single match, but to continue a program on on this premise alone, leaves things a little boring.

So boring, they needed to have an R-Truth 24/7 spot in the middle of the match. Them, they just go to commercial as NEVER finish or mention this unfinished match again.

And then there's this guy. WWE iterates globally, but seemingly doesn't change up the product for its various regions. If Saudi Arabia is still excited for The Undertaker and Goldberg, then why are we also subjected to it here in the United States.

I'm sure many of our citizens still LIKE The Undertaker, but I'm sure most of them still don't really want to see him wrestle anymore. Now do they want to hear him say his monotone, slow lines. Nor do they want those monotone, slow lines to CLOSE THE SHOW!

That's why WWE won't change, because it is no longer about the fans watching the television product. The television product is now merit a three hour commercial for their live events and merchandise.

Well, that's all I have the time for, I have nothing else to say, except that the show was slightly less boring than previous weeks, but that may just be because I've finally lowered my expectations enough.

Either way, if you want to hear more of my thoughts, and the thoughts of Tom, check out the next episode of The Spanish Announce Table podcast, where we will talk about this show, and so much more!

NXT TAKEOVER XXV

Source: wwe.com
WWE presented their 25th version of NXT Takeover, this past weekend.

The company made sure to call themselves the "true alternative in sports entertainment", a shot at the upstart All Elite Wrestling, no doubt.

While the excitement of true competition in the professional wrestling industry is growing; AEW is yet to fully exist. So, that leaves NXT as the ONLY alternative in sports entertainment.

Of course, you can argue that it's not much of an alternative if the same company operates it, but that's not why we're here. We're here to review NXT TAKEOVER XXV as its own entity. So let's get right into it!

RODERICK STRONG vs MATT RIDDLE

Source: wwe.com
Tom and I have been known to call Roderick Strong "The Man That Charisma Forgot". However, Tom did make note on the last episode of the podcast, that he does not believe that moniker applies while Strong is in the ring, in a match.

Tom is 100% correct if we are to use this match as evidence. Strong and Matt Riddle managed to tell a great story in this match, and I'm sure we can safely assume that Strong led this match, being the more-experienced performer, by a mile.

Matt Riddle is a star waiting to shine on the big stage. His performance in this match was excellent. Riddle can sell like Dolph Ziggler, which will help him tremendously. He made Roderick Strong, a man seemingly half his size, look like his toughest battle to date.

I don't often give this award out, but without question, I would put this match on my "Watch That Again" list.

⭐⭐⭐⭐
4 out of 5 stars!

NXT TAG TEAM CHAMPIONSHIP LADDER MATCH

The Street Profits vs Burch & Lorcan vs The Forgotten Sons vs Fish & O'Reilly

Source: wwe.com
WWE has figured out the ladder match. At least, they've figured out that 8 people in a ladder match makes it way more exciting than 2 people.

Having tag teams involved in ladder matches like this makes for so many fun and innovative spots that wouldn't seem believable otherwise.

My favorite spot of this match was the double German-suplex to Steve Cutler & Wesley Blake of The Forgotten Sons by Danny Burch & Oney Lorcan, while they had the ladder resting on their neck and shoulders. As much as I'm sure they practiced this spot a hundred times, it looked like Kyle O'Reilly didn't get out of the way in time, and nearly took the hardest hit from that spot as the ladder barely missed hitting him in the skull!

O'Reilly managed to avoid that particular shot, but he for sure gets the award for "Toughest MF'er of the Night", as that dude put his body on the line in this match, more times than I can count.

Also, every single performer in this match did well. This was perhaps the most entertaining match of the night, though having 8 participants probably makes it easier to earn that distinction. (Technically 9 performers as they sent out Jaxson Ryker to both dish and receive punishment. This was another fun spot, when everyone ganged up to neutralize him.)

The Street Profits (Montez Ford & Angelo Dawkins) will finally have a run as the champs, and that excites me. This is one of my favorite teams in all of wrestling. Their energy is contagious, and I feel like Ford is in for an insanely bright future in this industry.

⭐⭐⭐⭐
4 out of 5 stars!

NXT NORTH AMERICAN CHAMPIONSHIP MATCH

Velveteen Dream vs Tyler Breeze

Source: wwe.com
The NXT North American Champion Velveteen Dream is one of my favorite characters right now. It's subtle enough to not be pigeonholed into specific types of storylines, but still had more than enough substance to be full of detail.

This was an interesting storyline, going into the match, given the similarities in the attitude and presentation of both characters. It also had a THEN vs NOW feel to it.

As much as I like the character of Velveteen Dream, it's safe to say his in-ring performances are his weakest attribute, though he's still completely serviceable in the ring.

Tyler Breeze put in a good match, don't get me wrong. I did, however, feel that it drug on a little in spots. Ultimately that may be due to the placement on the match card. The previous two matches were so good, they may have soaked up all the available energy.

The shared selfie at the end of the night was a nice touch, and a contemporary update to the post-match handshake that fit the characters and the storyline very well.

⭐⭐⭐
3 out of 5 stars!

NXT WOMEN'S CHAMPIONSHIP MATCH

Shayna Baszler vs Io Shirai

Source: wwe.com
This match gave me the same feeling I get when I watch ANY Shayna Baszler match; which is, that Baszler is one of the best heels in the business right now. She has a demeanor about her that makes you want to root against her.

I kept telling myself that they need to move her to the main roster, but now I realize that would leave the entire NXT Women's Division full of performers that do not move the needle at all for me. At least not yet. If they have plans to build some babyfaces from that roster, then there would be no heel that could better get those people over. So, Shayna almost HAS to stick around NXT for a while.

The champ and Io Shirai put on a decent match, I guess. I just never really found myself getting into it much, even though I honestly felt like the outcome could go either way. I just didn't really seem to care.

I really wanted to give this match a higher rating. Perhaps if they wouldn't have saved the best spot for AFTER the match.

⭐⭐
2 out of 5 stars!

NXT CHAMPIONSHIP

Johnny Gargano vs Adam Cole

Source: wwe.com
I would have been shocked if Johnny Gargano and Adam Cole didn't deliver a damn good match, at least. I was not shocked!

If you aren't aware of how good these two performers are, there's probably nothing I'm going to say here that would clue you in any better; you should just watch the match.

Once again, The Undisputed Era holds the power associated with the NXT Championship. Where will this take us during NXT television? Will Johnny get a rematch? Will the Undisputed Era's personal troubles continue? I'm excited to find out!

⭐⭐⭐⭐
4 out of 5 stars!

As per usual, NXT did not fail to deliver a damn good show with some great matches.
Are they the "true" alternative in sports entertainment?
